Stirling, well-known for the Stirling castle, is a pretty town situated in central Scotland. I definitely had plans to visit this place during my stay in Glasgow but specially going to a town for just a short visit was both expensive and impractical.

Welcome to Stirling

I had one such fortunate occasion that gave me a chance to visit this place. I was returning from a trip to some other place and my return journey required me to switch trains at Stirling and I had an hour's gap between the two trains. The weather was sunny, which we all know is super rare in Scotland and given the renowned castle was within walking distance I had just enough window and the perfect opportunity to explore this beautiful town.

Right from Stirling's nice-looking railway station to the immaculate establishment of this town, it was an eye-pleasing experience. On starting from the station to the castle on foot, even though the castle was in the vicinity, the maps indicated it would take longer than expected to reach there. On following the trail, I realized it was because the walk across this town was all uphill.

Although it was one hell of a cardio session as some areas were really really steep, every nook and corner of this town was a sight to behold. Medieval architecture, tiny houses, lush greenery around, enchanting curtain walls of the castle and spring season to boot. The amazing part is a lot of the architecture around this town is inspired by the castle itself giving the whole town a medieval appearance.

Old-town stores along the street side, cozy outdoor cafes surrounded with canons, stone-wall houses and rubble wall fences, typical country-side road signs and to top it all the town boasts of an actual castle. The view of this little town and the vast expanse engulfing it, is best seen from the top where the castle is located.

Stirling makes one excellent example of an age old fortress teleported to modern times!
